Entries Sought for Water Plant Art Contest
The City of Ames Water and Pollution Control Department is sponsoring a public art contest and exhibition to obtain public art for the new water treatment plant. Artists may enter up to three two-dimensional pieces of art for the contest and exhibition. The theme for each piece must pertain to water. Submission deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, July 21, 2017.
“As an organization, the City of Ames is committed to bringing art to our public facilities. We feel the presence of artwork inspires our staff as well as visitors,” said John Dunn, Water and Pollution Control Director. “Having the art relate in some way to water will help us focus on our purpose at the new facility. Also, it’s another way of providing an enjoyable and stimulating environment for anyone who enters the building.”
The selection of art pieces will be a two-step process. Water and Pollution Control staff will jury initial entries from submitted photos. Artists whose work is selected will be asked to bring the actual piece by Aug. 21 for an exhibit at the new Water Treatment Plant, 1800 E. 13th St. From this exhibit, a “Best in Show” award winner will be selected, and the artist will receive a $400 honorarium. The exhibit will continue during the Water Treatment Plant Open House on Saturday, Aug. 26, and a second prize of $100 will be awarded for "People's Choice." The “People's Choice” will be voted on throughout the open house by attendees. Each piece entered will be considered for purchase by the City for its permanent art collection.
