I am installing a pool in my yard. What are the rules?
For any swimming pool over 24 inches deep, a 48 inch fence is required. Pools over 5,000-gallon capacity require a building permit. A 15 foot round pool with 48 inch sides is 5200 gallons. Prefabricated swimming pools that are less than 5,000 gallons and are located entirely above ground do NOT require a permit, but are still required to meet the code requirements for a fence or wall if the water is greater than 24 inches deep.

I want to put up a sign at my business. What do I need to do?
Permits are required by the City of Ames for all exterior sign work on all buildings and properties, with few exceptions. If your project isn't listed in the code as exempt from permit requirements, then you need to get a sign permit before starting work.
The permit application process is not complicated, but we need enough information to determine whether your project meets the relevant minimum codes before we can issue your sign permit. These steps don't necessarily have to occur in this order, but all need to be completed before we can issue your sign permit. Our goal is to identify and resolve code issues before your permit is issued and before you start work. It's relatively simple to make corrections or revisions to a project while it's still on paper -- not so simple in the middle of construction.
What is the process for filing a complaint against a rental property?
A tenant wishing to file a complaint must first contact their landlord in writing regarding their concern/s. If the concern is not addressed to the tenant’s satisfaction, a Tenant Complaint form can be filed with the Inspection Division. Legal questions cannot be addressed through the complaint process.
