Documentary screening: “Man with a Movie Camera”

The Ames Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with Austin, Texas, based music ensemble Montopolis, will present a screening of the 1929 Ukrainian documentary “Man with a Movie Camera” at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, in the City Auditorium, 520 Sixth St. The film will be shown with a live score presented by Montopolis.

“Man with a Movie Camera” is an experimental 1929 Soviet silent documentary film, directed by Dziga Vertov, filmed by his broker Mikhail Kaufman, and edited by his wife Yelizaveta Svilova. The film presents urban life in Moscow and the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Odessa during the late 1920s. Revered as a visual masterpiece, and one of the greatest documentaries ever made, the film gives historical context to the current Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased in person at the Community Center or by calling 515-239-5350. Tickets will also be sold at the door the evening of the performance.
