The Engineering Division designs, contracts, and supervises capital improvement projects involving streets, shared use paths/sidewalks, water mains, sanitary and storm sewers, and more. This includes the construction of infrastructure in new subdivisions. The Engineering Division also manages the transportation systems throughout our community, as well as the stormwater management activities that promote the enhancement of water quality throughout the community.

Engineering plays an integral part in the City organization and community by:

• Reviewing and monitoring subdivision development submittals.
• Reviewing plans and plats for consideration of public and private improvements.
• Preparing certified engineering plans and specifications and administering bid processes for Capital Improvements Plan construction projects.
• Inspecting construction projects.
• Supervising construction of all authorized public improvement projects and ensuring all construction within the City is done in accordance with policies, standards, and specifications.
• Maintaining as-built drawings and archive records of public infrastructure construction.
• Managing the City of Ames NPDES/ Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit.
• Developing and maintaining city-wide Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
