Project Information and Updated Project Map
2022/23 Asphalt Street Pavement Improvements Oakwood Road
Location: Oakwood Road (University Boulevard to Timberland Road)
Project Overview/Background: This annual program utilizes current repair and reconstruction techniques to improve our current asphalt streets. These pavement improvements are needed to restore structural integrity, serviceability, and rideability. This section of Oakwood Rd is an existing 27’ wide county roadway that was reconstructed in 1964 with a rolled stone base and HMA surface. The Oakwood Rd project will be widening Oakwood Rd out to a 3-lane section to accommodate for the large turning traffic volumes from University Blvd to Timberland Rd. This widening will stay within the current City of Ames right of way. The new 3 lane section will include a single lane in each direction with a left turn lane down the center of the section. Curb and gutter will be constructed for the length of the project as well. The project will also include updated ADA ramps, crosswalk improvements, and additional pedestrian crossings for Timberland Rd and Woodview Rd neighborhoods. Improvements will be made to the existing shared use trial as well. This will include relocating the trail crossing of Cedar Ln to improve safety and raising of the trail near Wessex DR. A new 24’’ storm sewer line will be constructed with the project which will reducing the amount of flooding and ponding on both the north and south side of Oakwood Rd. Construction is anticipated to begin this summer.
Please see the public feedback received by during the public meeting held January 18th at the Oakwood Rd Church. This feedback also includes responses from WHKS and City of Ames Staff.
The City of Ames is working with Alliant Energy for installation of new lighting along Oakwood Road. The lighting will be installed by Alliant Energy.
