City of Ames, IA
Home MenuThink Before You Flush
Just because it can go down the drain, doesn't mean it should. Please help protect our sewer system by only flushing the 3 Ps (poop, pee, toilet paper). Everything else will either clog your pipes, the City’s pipes, or work its way to the wastewater plant where it may have to be manually removed from screens and filters. This results in additional expenses for the City which leads to increased sewer rates.
Some commonly flushed items that cause harm to the sewer system include:
- Dental floss
- Cotton swabs
- Cotton balls
- Hair
- Fats, Oils, or Grease
- Food scraps
- Coffee grounds
- Feminine hygiene products
- Prophylactics
- Nail clippings
- “Flushable” wipes (baby wipes, makeup removal wipes, sanitary wipes, etc.)
- Wrappers
- Cigarette/Cigar butts
- Kitty Litter (Even "Flushable" types)
- Cleaning Products
- Diapers
- Medications
To properly dispose of medications, please visit the City's Drug Drop Off webpage.
In the video below, we compare several commonly flushed paper products. As you can see, toilet paper is the only product to break down completely. Others will cause significant clogs and damages.
